Gr 10-12 Dual Credit Courses

Career Connected Learning Pathways

Download our Collegiate Dual Credit Pathways flyer for 2024-2025

Through the collegiate model, LRSD will be able to extend the learning opportunities provided by PEAKS Campus and the surrounding land to a wider audience of younger students. By exploring various aspects of the regional natural and built environment, students will connect with areas of interest and prepare to select from one of the various career-connected pathways offered at the high school level.

At the high school level, the initial years of all three pathways are very similar. The pathways have been designed to consider student choice and flexibility, allowing students to change pathways at any time. Should students discover that they are not interested in one of the three dual credit pathways, their courses would still serve as prerequisites to other college classes and pathways. Our career practitioners and off-campus coordinators will work with students to raise awareness for these pathways, monitor progress and adjust student courses based on interest.

This chart  illustrates how each pathway connects as the student progresses through high school grade levels:

Students take up to two course per semester based on the completion of prerequisites or select from courses offered in the Grade 10 and/or 11 Pathways

Through a blended program leveraging the existing LRSD Virtual School, Lethbridge College LMS system for online instruction and PEAKS Collegiate Campus for hands-on experiential learning, students will be engaged in a progressive and flexible learning model. Students would come to PEAKS Campus for 4 nights and 5 days working through the experiential portion of the course in a variety of field study activities leveraging the local environment, industry partners and our mobile field lab to complete the lab requirements of the dual credit content.

Beginning in Grade 10, students will select and enroll in designated dual credit pathways. Students will leverage PEAKS Campus to set foundational knowledge and expand through field studies led by Lethbridge College instructors. Students will also travel to various locations to learn from industry partners in their places of work to further their understanding of the environmental and economic systems at play in Southern Alberta. The table below identifies the potential pathway for students completing a diploma or degree from Lethbridge College.

By making career connections, developing work related skills and being exposed to employment opportunities within the larger community, PEAKS Collegiate students will have a competitive advantage over their peers. Underserved industries such as resource management and environmental sciences require a capable and dynamic workforce. By receiving specialized educational programing and participating in work experience practicums, PEAKS Collegiate students will fulfill this needed role.

We must reiterate that the specialized programming is accomplished through access to the environment that surrounds the campus, the access to industry partners and the expertise of Lethbridge College instructors.

Combinations of these dual credit courses allow students to be awarded 50% of the post-secondary credits required for the completion of Environmental Assessment and Restoration, Natural Resource Compliance and Renewable Resource Management certifications. These courses will also support students in the completion of a Bachelor of Applied Science (Conservation Enforcement) or Bachelor of Ecosystem Management offered at Lethbridge College.

Field Studies

Through the collegiate model, students are immersed in a one- to two-week field study experience led by LRSD Place Based Supervisors and Lethbridge College instructors, in collaboration with local environmental science-focused organizations/industry partners.  Throughout these multi-day field studies, students will gain invaluable hands-on experiences exploring the diverse ecosystem while learning practical skills required by scientists in the field.

The itinerary and programming for the collegiate field studies will be collaboratively designed by the Environmental Sciences Department at Lethbridge College, LRSD staff, and relevant partner organizations.

To facilitate high-quality field study experiences, a fully equipped mobile field lab is currently being used. The mobile lab includes water quality testing equipment, lab benches, microscopes, invertebrate study equipment, tree health monitoring equipment and several other pieces of equipment.

Work Experience

Participation in work experience with industry partners will provide additional credits towards high school completion and will take place during July and August. Students will work under the guidance an industry mentor  for a minimum of four weeks.d skills and experience that potential employers are looking for. Practicum placements will also afford students the opportunity to make valuable career connections and bolster their resumes. While in the field students would perform duties outlined by the employers within agreed upon safety guidelines established by LRSD in collaboration with each industry partner specific to the nature and location of their operations. LRSD staff (off campus coordinators) will ensure that PPE, first aid and other safety related equipment are available at all times.
